London: #TBT Tea, Scones, and All the Sights
When Jen and I decided to do a UK trip, she was ambivalent about going to London, expecting it to be not all that different from New York. Having been during my semester abroad, I assured her it was worth it to make it part of our trip, despite the pound's inconvenient dominance over our paltry dollar.
I remembered loving it. Sure, it's the most Western of the cities I've visited in Europe, but despite many a comparison to NYC, it really isn't like NYC at all. Yes, it's bustling, hectic, and very metropolitan. Yes, young professionals are working obscene hours in high-rise office buildings. And yes, it too has a filthy underground system that makes you want to shoot yourself in the face.
But New York is so young compared to London. If you're a Londoner, maybe after work you want to take a jog in the park...around Kensington PALACE. You can visit Shakespeare's Globe Theater if you want to. You can take an afternoon TEA break, FFS. So London is pretty rad.
I wouldn't say it was the highlight leg of our trip last year, but I still get nostalgic for it. Among the awesomeness we experienced there, Jen and I saw "Miss Saigon," which made it clear why London's West End theater is just as good as (if not better than) New York's Broadway. The food is every bit as terrible as you might imagine, but the scones are bangin'. The museums are free and full of great art, especially the Tate Modern, my all-time favorite. We got a taste of the swanky nightlife at the Ham Yard Hotel with Jen's friend David, who lives there now and has this awesome travel blog. Everyone has a charming fucking accent, especially the children. AND everyone dresses like a grandfather who works in a library, which means I fit right in!
