Atlanta: MLK Historic Site

Today isn't just "that long weekend in January right after the holidays." In fact, it's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Atlanta and see the MLK Historic Site. Besides the typical Visitor Center (which is actually pretty great), there's a ton of other buildings that you can explore and learn about including Ebenezer Baptist Church, MLK's birth home, and the King Center (with reflecting pool). Seeing where Dr. King lived, as well as actual items of clothing and writings was haunting. You can also see a daily reenactment of the "I Have a Dream" speech, but unfortunately we were too short on time. There are also a few major monuments scattered throughout the area, but they weren't as powerful as the buildings for me.

Basically, the site is a place where you could (and should) spend nearly a full day. Unfortunately, we didn't have that kind of time, so we did an abbreviated tour. Here's what we saw:

Next time I'm skipping the Coke tour. I suggest you do the same.
