NYC: #TBT Manus x Machina
This past summer, The Met had one of my favorite costume exhibits of all time. If you're not familiar with their costume exhibits, then you probably aren't familiar with the event that kicks everything off: The Met Ball. Each year, the Met partners with Vogue and picks a theme for the exhibit. Some years are better than others (you can't compare something as specific and prolific as McQueen to something as rando and generic as "Model As Muse"). Everyone at the gala is supposed to portray the theme, and this year proved to be supes difficult for some starlets. A lot of people looked like they either thought the theme was cyborg or silver.
The theme was actually Manus x Machina, which really just means machine-made couture clothing (usually it's hand-stitched). It made for a really interesting exhibit that I ended up visiting twice! The clothing ranged from high-end "Project Runway" challenges (I see you Gareth Pugh straw dress) to a high-tech, 3D laser-printed bodice. The gallery space was transformed into a cathedral complete with projections on a domed ceiling, Enya music vibes, and a show-stopping Chanel number at the center of it all. Check out a few of my snaps from the exhibit followed by my jaunt up to the rooftop for a martini, a sunset, and a Psycho Barn.
