The Reading List: Jen's Winter 2016 Picks

Staci already gave you her winter reading recs, but you can always use some more, right? Here are some that I can't wait to get my hands on. They should come in handy for my Amtrak adventures ahead in April!

Ways to Disappear

This book just came out (like two weeks ago!) and is already getting tons of buzz, so I'm expecting good things. The description reminds me a bit of Where'd You Go Bernadette? but that's not a bad thing, because I loved that book. In Novey’s debut novel, a famous Brazilian novelist vanishes, leaving her children and a translator to solve the puzzling circumstances of her disappearance. Apparently it's fast-paced and part mystery, part romance. Sounds right up my alley.

All the Light We Cannot See

This was an instant NY Times Best Seller, which... doesn't always mean it's great, but in this case I'm gonna trust the acclaim. The plot about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II sounds genuinely riveting.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

I'm no stranger to Murakami, but I haven't gotten around to reading all his works yet. After all, they're like each a million pages. A million great pages, but still. This one focuses on a deranged scientist, his granddaughter, and a data processor. Did I mention that somehow Bob Dylan, Lauren Bacall, and subterranean monsters also factor in? Yeah. I can't wait.

Sudden Death

Like Ways to Disappear, this book is fresh off the presses. The adventure story set in the 16th century is "a daring, kaleidoscopic novel about the clash of empires and ideas, told through a tennis match between the radical Italian artist Caravaggio and the Spanish poet Francisco de Quevedo, played with a ball made from the hair of the beheaded Anne Boleyn." Interest piqued.

High Dive

This one isn't even out yet, but it made the list based on plot alone. It's my favorite kind of book -- historical fiction.  It looks at the weeks leading up to the Brighton Hotel bombing through the lens of various characters involved in the attempted assassination. Should be interesting!

Any books coming out soon that you're looking forward to reading?
