The Reading List: Jen's Beach Reads 2016

Memorial Day is coming up which means the beaches are calling my name. Since Mexico helped me get through most of my winter reading list, its time to see what else is out there for all of my planned beach lounging.

Circling the Sun

I'm a big fan of The Paris Wife. If for nothing else, it turned me onto reading Hemingway and for that I am grateful. I'm excited to read McLain's follow up (and NY Times Bestseller). It's another historical fiction drama (and you know I love those -- there's at least one on every reading list I make!). This one follows lady badass Beryl Markham who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west. She was also a race horse trainer, bush pilot, and author who had a ridiculously unconventional childhood. I can't wait to learn more about this #BossLady.

Food: A Love Story

I love comedy. I love food. There's no reason I shouldn't love this book.

Something to Food About: Exploring Creativity with Innovative Chefs

I'm one of those rare millennials who has no opinion on Questlove. I mean, his music doesn't offend me, but I never thought of him as a musical genius. That is until I listened to his recent interview with Terry on Fresh Air. I have a whole new respect for this guy. Besides holding down like 25 jobs at once, he's also funny as hell and a "food enthusiast" (can that be my official job title?). Bourdain trusts him as a food guide, so why shouldn't I?

The Summer Before the War: A Novel

I have a feeling this recent release will be on a bunch of beaches this summer. Why? Because this NY Times Bestseller is being called "the cure to your Downton Abby withdrawl." It focuses on a small idyllic English town right before the start of WWI and features scandal and star-crossed lovers. Sound familiar?

Miller's Valley: A Novel

This one also just came out. (Side note: What's with this trend where titles are formatted, "XXXXX: A NOVEL"? I already know that I'm reading a novel. I didn't just stumble into read a page without knowing wtf I was getting into.) This bestseller follows a young woman who goes home and uncovers dark secrets about her family. Normally this wouldn't grab me, but people seem to love it so who am I to argue?

What are you reading this summer?
