Baltimore: Light City 2018 Preview
Friends. Loved ones. The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us!
I'd say that's spring, but as the end of the world is nigh (#ThanksTrump), it's apparent that I should make no assumptions about warm weather, so instead I'll just plan on wearing my down jacket for Light City this year and be pleasantly surprised if I can wear sandals instead in mid-April the way God and global warming intended.
Light City! That's right! My now-annual obsession.
In case you're new here and not familiar, Light City is a "festival of light, music, and innovation" in Baltimore. It began a year after the Freddie Gray riots, and while I don't mean to imply it was meant to solve or has solved any of the city's problems, I thought it was a beautiful way for the city to heal.
Light sculptures sprinkled throughout neighborhoods and concentrated in the downtown area illuminated the city in the evening, free to all of the city's residents and visitors to come out and enjoy. Live music events took place every night, and Labs@Light City featured seminars on innovation and community throughout each day.
It's the fucking BEST.
Photos never ever seem to do it justice, but trust me -- so beautiful, so fun, and of course, also very yummy (would I ever send you somewhere without food involved?).
This year Neighborhood Lights starts April 6 in the Baybrook/Curtis Bay, Belair-Edison, Bromo Tower Arts & Entertainment District, Darley Park, Federal Hill, Hamilton-Lauraville, Highlandtown, Hollins Roundhouse/Southwest Baltimore, Little Italy, Locust Point, Patterson Park, Pigtown/Washington Village, Remington and Waverly.
The Art Walk, Labs, and Festival begin April 14 and end April 21. One of the first performances is by Grandmaster Flash continuing an awesome tradition of hip hop shows (still bitter I missed D.J. Jazzy Jeff).
This year's Art Walk has 21 installations, and it looks SO COOL. I mean...WHAT'S A WHALE GHOST? And don't worry -- I know Charlie the Peacock isn't listed there, but that's because this year he's on the move. :)
If all that isn't enough to entice you to visit Bmore and Light City this year, here's a bonus! Jen will be in town the first weekend for my favorite race, Sole of the City!
