Mexico: Puerto Morelos & Cenotes
For our minimoon, Mike and I wanted to visit a place we’d already visited so that we didn’t feel a ton of pressure to explore but would instead have some time to relax. That said, we still wanted to go snorkeling, dive in some new cenotes, and visit a cute little fishing village called Puerto Morelos. Luckily, this was all possible in just a quick day trip from our hotel via Kay Tours.
Our trip started at dawn in order to get the best views of fish and a less tourist-crowded ocean.
The first stop was the quaint town of Puerto Morelos.
Our wonderful guide, Santiago, got us suited up and on the boat to swim in the reef. We saw all kinds of critters like a sea turtle, eagle ray, eels, and obviously tons of fish.
Next up on our day trip was Zapote Cenote, which actually houses a few different types of cenotes.
I was tricked, however, into taking a zipline over the Mayan jungle to get there. At first I was furious/terrified, but I quickly got over it because #YOLO.
Following our thrilling ride through the tree tops, we found ourselves jumping into several cenotes — one filled with algae, one completely clear (that Mike jumped into from 60 ft), and one filled with stalagmites.
We napped on the way back to the hotel and then rode our bikes to the beach. It was a glorious day.
If you’re in Playa Del Carmen, I HIGHLY recommend Kay Tours for any adventure or historical outings. They offer private tours with super knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides — and as you can see, gorgeous views.
