The Reading List: 2019 Beach Reads
I know that beach reads season is seemingly over for most people, but since I barely got to the beach this year and will be away for a week lounging in Playa Del Carmen, I think it’s a fine time to review some 2019 books for the beach.
Here’s what I’m bringing with me on my Kindle:
Normal People
This book is being made into a 12-part Hulu series with the BBC, so I want to read it before viewing. The novel is described as a tale of love, perception and identity in a small town. It sounds perfect for the beach and the small screen. (And Staci recommends it too!)
Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language
Based on the title alone, I’m in. Amanda Montell takes readers on a .journey through the history of language and controversial terms like “bitch.” Vocal fry not included.
City of Girls
I think that we can all agree that Eat Pray Love defined a summer for many a beach-goer. Elizabeth Gilbert is back with a less personal tale of 1940s NYC glamour and theater.
Bunny
This novel takes on MFA graduate writing programs and the pretension that comes with them. It’s got everything from mind games to class anxiety and, of course, girl cliques. It’s been cosigned by Lena Dunham, so do with that what you will.
The Nickel Boys
I was pretty much obsessed with The Underground Railroad when it debuted, so I’m SUPER excited to get my eyes on Colson Whitehead’s new novel. His new book is also focused on race, but the timeline has been moved up to the Jim Crow South and focuses on segregation in schools and abuse. Not a real pick-me-upper, but definitely essential reading.
Any good books you read this summer? I want more recs!
