Canada: Two Days In Jasper
There are no shortage of hikes and views in the Canadian Rockies, so it was hard for us to decide how to split up our trip. Ultimately we decided to do two full days in Banff, one full day of the Icefield Parkway, two full days in Jasper, and one full day in Louise with a half day in Canmore before we leave.
By the point we reach Jasper during our trip, we’ll have already been majorly wowed by the sights along the way. I’ve heard that making the trip up further north does not disappoint in more spectacular scenery and wildlife.
Here’s what’s on the agenda for our two days in Jasper:
Maligne Lake Cruise + Spirit Island
Almost every guidebook I’ve seen for the Canadian Rockies either has a picture of Lake Louise on the front or Maligne Lake/Spirit Island so how could we NOT make plans to see it?? Since Spirit Island is only accessible by specific tours, we’ll be forking over some money to see the sights.
Jasper Sky Tram
One of the best things about Banff, Louise, and Jasper is that they all have gondolas to peaks. That way, there’s no cutting down of nature for roads and no harmful emissions from cars affecting the area. Downside is that they are quite pricey for a 8-10 minute ride ($60 pp) but I’d happily pay that to not have to hike 8 to 10 hours uphill. :)
Surprise Corner
After lunch we’ll drive over with our coffees to Surprise Corner for a view of the iconic castle-like Fairmont Hotel.
Town of Jasper
Like Canmore and Banff, the town of Jasper is cute, but small. We’ll spend some time finding good drinks and eats as always!
Northern Lights
The last time we tried to catch the northern lights in Iceland it was a bust — too cloudy and not the right conditions. Though it’s slim that we’ll see them in Canada since it’ll be the summertime, there is still a chance of catching them up at Jasper. I have alerts set up from those who track them in the area.
While it seems like there’s less to do in Jasper than in Banff, Jasper takes longer to hike and view. I’m excited for a small lake cruise and to learn more about the area.
