The Playlist: Podcasts for the New Year
On our recent seven-hour drive up to Vermont (post to come soon!), we had more than enough time to burn through our regular podcasts, so we sought out new ones to keep us entertained.
Here's what we found:
Judge John Hodgman
If you ever wished that Judge Judy had a virtual courtroom and was a comedian who heard disputes like, "Is chili a soup or a stew?" and "Is it better to have a fake Christmas tree or a real one?" then you're going to love this podcast by Daily Show alum, John Hodgman. John and his "bailiff," Jesse Thorn, hear real-life disputes over Skype and then deliver the "verdict." It's hilarious.
Pop Rocket
If you find yourself wishing that NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour was a little less "NPR" and a little more...sweary (?), then you should check out Pop Rocket. Comedian Guy Branum hosts panelists in a round table discussion about all things pop culture.
More Perfect
This Radiolab spinoff is getting rave reviews (mostly from my boyfriend, Mike -- a podcast aficionado). The show uncovers untold stories of the Supreme Court and explores how the decisions are made. It's educational, but not preachy -- much like Radiolab.
West Wing Weekly
If you too are missing the days of President Bartlett, then you should check out The West Wing Weekly podcast. Hosts Joshua Molina and (actor in the show) Hrishkesh Kirway explore Sorkin's idealistic political drama with deadpan wit. They have guests on like West Wing actors Dule Hill and Richard Schiff. It's the kick of feel-good politics and nostalgia we all need right now.
Crimetown
I first heard this recommended on a different podcast, How Did This Get Made. They really couldn't be more different. While HDTGM examines movies through the lens of four comedians, Crimetown takes the Serial approach and looks at corruption and crime culture in one American city per season. Created by Jinx producers Zac Stuart-Pontier and Marc Smerling, the podcast first takes on Providence, Rhode Island, and it's fascinating.
