NYC: August Events
The last month of summer is already upon us (are you freaking out too?), so its time to cram in as many fun outdoor things NYC has to offer. New York has something going on every month, but August is particularly great because there's a little something for everyone from sports to music to food and culture.
U.S. Open
Who wouldn't want to see Serena crushing it live? Or Federer at maybe one of his last majors? The end of the major tennis tournaments happens right here in NYC, and it's actually not too hard to score a seat. At the very least, you can grab a lawn seat and catch the matches with other tailgaters outside the stadium.
When: Aug. 29-Sept. 11
Where: Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens
Fringe Festival
With over 1,000 performances and 200 shows, there's bound to be something for everyone. There's dance, comedy, musicals, and something called "clown/mask." So yeah...literally something for everyone. Tickets are just $18!
When: Aug. 12-28
Where: Various theaters in downtown Manhattan
Summer Streets
I will always remember Summer Streets fondly because it's when I ran my fastest mile (and fastest 7 miles ever). Last year featured a giant water slide that was both fun and terrifying. They're bringing it back this year, so reserve your spot now!
When: Aug. 6, 13, 20; 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Park Ave./Lafayette St. from Brooklyn Bridge to 72nd St.
Afropunk Festival
I have a few friends going to this one this year. With major hip hop artists, food trucks, and live artwork, there's really no reason not to go. Considering the current political climate, there's never been a better time to check this out. As the site says, "This isn’t about getting elected, or being protected; it’s about staking a claim."
When: Aug. 27-28
Where: Commodore Barry Park, Brooklyn
Blues BBQ Festival
This music + food fest is exactly what it says on the box -- tons of great bbq from places like Dinosaur BBQ, Mighty Quinn's, and Arrogant Swine with some live blues! Plus, it's FREE!
When: Aug. 20, 2 p.m.
Where: Hudson River Park
Jazz Age Lawn Party
This classic event has grown over the years. It started out several years ago as a one-day event and it has bloomed into a massively popular festival held a few times over the summer. Jazz, costumes, and bubbly? What's not to love?
When: Aug. 13 and 14
Where: Governor's Island
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival
Queens has turned this Chinese tradition into a modern sport and international party. Besides the giant rowing competition, there's music, dancing martial arts demonstrations and of course, delicious food.
When: Aug. 6-7
Where: Flushing Meadows Park, Queens
Didn't cover anything you're interested in? Well, you're probably not someone I'd like to be friends with. But here are some more recs anyway.
