The Playlist: Jen's Podcast Refresh
Staci's recent podcast update got me thinking -- I should really do the same. After getting stuck on a Brooklyn-bound N train last week for nearly two hours, I figured that was as good a time as any.
Here's what got me through the slog.
More or Less
I wouldn't call myself a lover of stats or even really numbers, but this show has me hooked. From the dissection of the fucked up way we calculate BMI to the crazy story behind Trump's "what's happening in Sweden" comment, you can get the real facts from two lovely hosts with British accents.
Missing Richard Simmons
Literally everyone and your mom is talking about this podcast, right? It's basically the new Serial. Seriously, WTF happened to Richard Simmons? The mystery is legit and super weird. I'm not holding my breath for a satisfying resolution, but I'm enjoying the ride!
Sooo Many White Guys
How have we not talked about this one before?! One half of HTJL fave 2 Dope Queens Phoebe Robinson sits down with a variety of interesting people, none of whom are white men. (Except for one token white dude). Some of my favorite episodes include Issa Rae, St. Vincent, Roxane Gay and Hari Kondabolu. Note: The theme song will get stuck in your head. There's no way around it.
The Hilarious World Of Depression
I, like many people, think that most great comedians are actually suffering from some form of depression. This podcast basically proves my theory. It takes away the stigma associated with mental health by allowing well-known guests to open up about their experiences and offer insight. Guests include Maria Bamford, Andy Richter, and Paul F. Tompkins just to name a few. The show is worth a listen whether or not you deal with depression personally.
My Dad Wrote a Porno
I'd heard about this one on a few other podcasts including Pop Culture Happy Hour (it's a favorite over there) and finally decided to give it a go. Imagine if your dad was a truly terrible writer (with seemingly no understanding of female anatomy) and self-published an erotic novel. This actually happened to James Morton. Instead of pretending like it never happened, he decided to unleash it on the world, one chapter at a time. Its cringe-worthy, hilarious, and worth a listen.
What are you waiting for? Get listening!
