The Menu: Eat NYC, Run NYC
I'd love to tell you I was purposefully a disgusting glutton this past weekend to prep for the NYC Half Marathon, but the truth is the restaurants Jen picked for us this weekend were all just really good and I felt like it was on me to not do them a disservice and instead eat ALL THE FOOD.
Friday night we started at Sidecar, a few blocks from Jen's new place in Brooklyn. Known for its "French redneck" cuisine, only our stoned-AF hipster waiter rivaled the fried chicken for star of the show.
As Jen and I do in our travels, we started Saturday with an obscene amount of pastries (with a side of coffee), this time from Colson Patisserie, an award-winning bakery also in walking distance from Jen's home in BK.
After digesting the pain au chocolat, pear and caramel turnover, sweet brioche, and peach something-delicious-or-other, it was time for second breakfast -- brunch at the Tipsy Parson in Chelsea! Warning though! What looks like a simple egg sandwich on the menu is actually a disgustingly delicious platter of heart attack if you order it with the "biscuit bomb" as your bread. I had assumed the cheese and sausage would be baked into the bread, but instead a little nugget of sausage was nestled inside and the entire biscuit was SMOTHERED in copious amounts of cheese. The eggs were on the side. It was tasty AF and I ate it all, but I did want to die a little bit afterward.
After an afternoon spent attempting to walk off carbs at the race expo, the Samsung Experience, and the Whitney, we had time to kill before our dinner reservations, so we shmoozed around Eataly Flatiron and grabbed drinks at the rooftop bar.
I don't remember if we felt hungry or not, but naturally we ate our faces off at The Smith, NoMad.
Nothing delicious gets eaten right before a race, but ALL THE DELICIOUS THINGS GET CONSUMED AFTER. Jen booked us a reservation at the Vanderbilt in Prospect Heights, and while the service was kind of shoddy and bizarre, the food and (free) champagne made up for it. And since, you know, we ran a race, we figured we should top it off with ice cream across the street from Ample Hills Creamery.
After recovering with a "Great British Baking Show" marathon, we celebrated race day and my birthday at Talde, the pan-Asian restaurant of Dale Talde, from "Top Chef." Poor Jen had promised us such delights as breakfast ramen, dim sum, and halo-halo, but it appears Talde changed their offerings and we had none of that. Still, the samosas, wonton soup, Korean fried chicken, and crab fried rice we shared were downright delectable.
Thanks Brooklyn! My opinion of you heightened with every bite.
