Maligne Lake & Spirit Island

Usually, I post chronologically, but Spirit Island has stuck with me since going almost a year ago, so it’s going ahead of some other posts from this trip. I’d seen so many images of Spirit Island in books and blogs, that I thought I knew what to expect, but it felt different experiencing it in person.

Quick note: you cannot step foot on the island because it is sacred land to the Indigenous people who reside around Maligne Lake.

After a brief boat ride guided by a local Indigenous crew, we learned about the history of the lake, the island, and the tribes around the lake. Then everyone took self-guided hikes on trails across from Spirit Island. Even without stepping foot on it, the atmosphere and feeling surrounding the island were palpable.

Maligne Lake

My experience of the lake was the boat ride, which was super informative and very pleasant.

Maligne Canyon

A nice start to our day, though we weren’t blown away, probably because of all the canyons we’d seen so far in the trip.

Medicine Lake

Our stop here was very brief, but it was very serene!

Wildlife

Throughout the day, we encountered so much wildlife. Sadly, we were not equipped with decent enough cameras to capture them all, but here’s what we got!

Our first full day in Jasper lived up to all of our expectations!
