Packing List: Skiing On The Cheap
With the 2018 Winter Olympics upon us, it's only appropriate that I take my annual ski trip to Vermont. Although I've invested in some more expensive pieces over the years, when I first started skiing, I wasn't sure that I'd be sticking with it and didn't want to spend a ton of money on gear. Luckily, that's where Amazon came in.
There's a ton of affordable options out there to outfit you for new skiing/snowboarding adventures if you're not yet sure about taking the leap.
1. Outdoor Windproof Fleece Ski Jacket Mountaineer Rain Jacket, $59.99 Amazon
If there's one important thing you need, it's a thick, waterproof coat with lots of pockets. You definitely don't want to freeze on the slopes and you'll likely be falling a bunch, so make sure it has a waterproof shell that will keep you guarded from the elements.
2. Andake Ski Gloves, Snowproof 3M Thinsulate Waterproof, $14.99 Amazon
Another important part of your gear is your gloves. You can't ski without 'em (or you might not come back with functional hands). Get a pair that clips together so there's a smaller chance of losing them. I'd also recommend glove liners.
3. SMITH Women's Drift Snow Goggles, $50 Amazon
You can get away skiing the smaller slopes without goggles, but they're still a good thing to have, especially if it's sunny out. SMITH is a classic, lower-priced brand with interchangeable lenses for different conditions.
4. Arctix Women's Cargo Snow Pants, $23.67 Amazon
Waterproof pants are another must. You never really need pricey options for these. I still ski in these pants and they work perfectly well.
5. Women Snow Skiing Socks, $19.95 Amazon
I never knew that I needed socks specific to skiing until after my first blister-filled run. Ski boots are tight AF, and because of that, you need thin but hella warm socks.
6. Soft Fleece Neck Gaiter Warmer Face Mask 2-Pack, $8.99 Amazon
Up on the mountain and lift, things can get CHILLY. I like to cover as much of my face as humanly possible and this soft AF gaiter does the trick.
7. Baleaf Women's Half Zip Pullover Quick Dry Running Top With Thumbholes, 18.99 Amazon
You'll be needing base layers under your jacket to stay nice and toasty. I usually just use my running gear since it's already Drifit and cold gear. Anything with a tall neck and thumb holes is a plus.
8. Duofold Women's Mid-Weight Wicking Thermal Leggings, $13.99 Amazon
Besides a top base layer, you'll need a bottom one. Go for a mid-heavy wicking legging.
But what about the boots, skiis, poles and helmet you ask? Rent them, dummy! All ski resorts have great equipment available for rent. Still looking for a deal? Use Liftopia to score discounted lift tickets on slopes all over.
Happy skiing!
